The most reliable option: use a proper ring sizer
If accuracy matters, a jeweler or a proper ring-sizing tool is the best place to start. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) specifically cautions that string and paper measurements can be inaccurate because those materials stretch, twist, and do not behave like a metal ring. If you already own a ring that fits the same finger comfortably, bring it to a jeweler or compare its inside diameter with a reliable ring-size chart. This is often easier than measuring the finger itself.
Why ring size can change during the day
Hands are not perfectly static. Temperature, activity, hydration, and even the time of day can make fingers feel slightly tighter or looser. For a more useful measurement, check more than once and avoid measuring immediately after your hands have been very cold or hot.
